The Yuyuan, or Garden of Contentment, is one the best gardens in China. It is near a famous old tea house with a zigzag bridge in heart of the old city of Shanghai. The garden was originally made, in 1559, for a retired scholar-administrator, but has often been damaged and rebuilt. Many of the garden features are excellent: the dragon wall, the moon gate, the long roofed corridor-bridge and a brilliant collection of garden windows and doors. The artificial mountain, made of yellow rocks, is thought to survive from the original design and to be the work of Zhang Nanyang.
YU GARDEN (ALSO CALLED YUAN YUAN GARDEN )
We will also visit old town Shanghai, the scenic Bund waterfront, Nanjing Road, a Silk Weaving workshop and the impressive Jade Buddah Temple.
The Jade Buddha Temple was founded in 1882 with two jade Buddha statues imported to Shanghai from Burma by sea. These were a sitting Buddha (1.95 meters tall, 3 tons), and a smaller reclining Buddha representing Buddha's death. The temple now also contains a much larger reclining Buddha made of marble

Thursday May 19th (B,L,D)
This morning we will enjoy scenic cruising of the Xiling Gorge, first of the 3 Gorges.
Each of the destinations for the Three Gorges is unique and stunning but Xiling Gorge is arguably the most incredible. This gorge is well known for its peaceful streams, karst caves, and natural springs.
Xiling Gorge is the longest of the three (45 miles).
The banks are covered with orange orchards. Along this gorge sit many archeological sites, including the Huangling Temple, first built during the Three Kingdoms Period.
Xiling Gorge
After completing our sail through the Xiling Gorge, we will enjoy an included excursion at Sandouping to see the amazing Three Gorges Dam.
The Three Gorge Dams is the largest dam in the world, as wide as the Golden Gate Bridge and twice as tall, capable of generating 18 gigawatts of hydro-electric power.
Upon returning from the Dam, lunch is included onboard ship and the afternoon is at leisure to relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of the river from a lounge on the sun deck as we gently sail the Yangtze.

Afterwards we will return to our luxury river cruising vessel and after our included lunch onboard ship, we will enjoy scenic cruising through spectacular scenery of the first two gorges - Qutang and Wu with narration of the sights from the cruise director.
We will enjoy the breathtaking sights from the comfort of the open air sun deck or if you prefer, from the balcony of your own stateroom.
The Twelve Peaks of the Wu Gorge also make this a wonderful visit when sailing the Yangtze River to the Three Gorges. These peaks bank the water, each prominent, strong, and boasting an interesting legend. You will also find the Three Little Gorges, which is another great place to visit, as well as the Kongming Stele, a magnificent historic relic.
The Qutang Gorge is the shortest. However, while this gorge might be small, it is the most majestic. Mt. Chijia and Mr. Baiyan soar over the water, with peaks that are nearly 4000 feet high, creating the appearance of an ancient gate made of natural resources. The Qutang Gorge has fast-moving water and it is very deep, yet the passageway is narrow.
Qutang Gorge
Wu Gorge
After our sailing of the Wu and Qutang Gorges, the evening is at leisure.
If you wish, take an optional excursion early this evening to the White Emperor City at Fengjie.
A red wall with an imposing yellow dragon-head gateway surrounds the temple complex, which clings to imposing cliffs.
It is actually is a mini city scattered with temples and gates on top of Baidi Hill.

This evening, enjoy dinner onboard ship, followed by a festive crew talent show. (B,L,D)

Some natural scenes like virgin forests, mountains, everglades, grassland, canyons, and karst caves can be admired. On the southern bank of Yangtze River, the Snow Jade Cave is the most attractive one.
The Snow Jade Cave is rated as China's most beautiful by Chinese National Geography.
Discovered in the mid-1990's, the cave is over 1,022 miles long. At present, it is the youngest cave discovered in China
Most of the stalactites in the cave are white and pure as jade making the cave a snow world. 80% of the cave is white, so the cave name, Snow Jade Cave

Johkang Monastery
The Jokhang, or "House of the Lord," is the holiest site in Tibet and is the ultimate pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Buddhists. King Songtsen Gampo first built a temple here in the mid-7th century, but the structure that we see today is largely the result of reconstruction in the 17th century, commissioned by the Fifth Dalai Lama.
Jokhang Temple ("House of the Lord") in Lhasa is the holiest site in Tibetan Buddhism, attracting crowds of Tibetan pilgrims and curious foreign tourists every year. It hosts the annual Great Prayer Festival, as well as all ceremonies of initiation for the Dalai Lama and Panchen Llamas

Drepung Monastery is one of the "great three" Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet. The other two are Gander and Sera. Drepung is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries, and indeed at its peak was the largest monastery of any religion in the world. It was founded in 1416 by Jamyang Chojey , a direct disciple of Je Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelukpa school. It houses many cultural relics, which adorn the monastery and make it more superb.
Norbulingka is a palace and surrounding park in Lhasa, Tibet which served as the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas from the 1780s up until the PRC takeover in the late 1950s. The park was built by the Seventh Dalai Lama beginning in 1755. In 2001, UNESCO inscribed Norbulingka on its World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace".
Situated about 3 km in the west of Lhasa, the Norbulingka used to be the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama. The pleasant park consists of small palaces, chapels and a zoo. In the past, each spring a grand procession of lamas would follow the Dalai Lama to move into the park. Before 1959, common people had no access to the palace.

Sera Monastery
Sera, meaning "merciful hail" is a challenge to Drepung monastery, whose name means "rice heap" in the sense that hail damages rice. Founded in 1419, at its height, Sera monastery was residence to more than 5,000 monks and five monastic colleges.
The Sera Monastery is dedicated to the Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Sect, a branch of Tibetan Buddhism.
The Sera Monastery is magnificent and covers an area of 114,946 square meters (28 acres).

Thursday May 26th (B,L,D)
After breakfast, full day sightseeing Xian including Terracotta Warriors, Big
Wild Goose Pagoda, Bell Tower Square.
Today, we will enjoy of tour of the legendary Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses. The Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses are the most significant archeological excavations of the 20th century. It is a sight not to be missed by any visitor to China. These artifacts were associated with the Qin Dynasty (211-206 BC) and Qin Shi Huang, later the first Emperor of all China. Life size terracotta figures of warriors and horses arranged in battle formations are the star features. They are replicas of what the imperial guard looked like in those days of pomp and vigor. There are columns of soldiers at the front, followed by war chariots at the back.
Altogether over 7,000 pottery soldiers, horses, chariots, and even weapons have been unearthed from these pits. Most of them have been restored to their former grandeur.
The Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses is a sensational archeological find of all times. It has put Xian on the map for tourists. It was listed by UNESCO in 1987 as one of the world's best cultural heritage sites.
Next we will visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. As the symbol of the old-line Xian, Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a well-preserved ancient building and a holy place for Buddhists. Originally built in 652 during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), it functioned to collect Buddhist materials that were taken from India by the hierarch Xuanzang.
First built to a height of 60 meters (197 feet) with five stories, it is now 64.5 meters (211.6 feet) high with an additional two stories. It was said that after that addition came the saying-'Saving a life exceeds building a seven-storied pagoda'. Externally it looks like a square cone, simple but grand and it is a masterpiece of Buddhist construction. Built of brick, its structure is very firm. Inside the pagoda, stairs twist up so that visitors can climb and overlook the panorama of Xian City from the arch-shaped doors on four sides of each storey. On the walls are engraved fine statues of Buddha by the renowned artist Yan Liben of the Tang Dynasty. Steles by noted calligraphers also grace the pagoda. (B,L,D)
Friday May 27th (B,L,D)
After breakfast, we will be transferred to the airport for our flight to Beijing. Upon arrival we will be taken on a tour of the Temple of Heaven.
The Temple of Heaven, was established in 1420 during the reign of Ming Emperor Yongle (r. 1403-1424), who also founded the Forbidden City. The temple was originally established as the Temple of Heaven and Earth, but was given its current name during the reign of Ming Emperor Jiajing (r. 1522-1567), who built separate complexes for the earth, sun, and moon.
The Temple of Heaven represents the pinnacle of Ming and Qing architecture and was built to worship heaven and to pray for good harvests every year
The architecture and layout of the temple of Heaven is based on elaborate symbolism and numerology. In accordance with principles dating back to pre-Confucian times, the buildings in the Temple of Heaven are round, like the sky, while the foundations and axes of the complex are rectilinear, like the earth. The symbolism of the temple was necessary since the complex served as the setting in which the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, directly beseeched Heaven to provide good harvests throughout the land. This was important since agriculture was the foundation of China's wealth in the imperial period.
Inside the temple, The Imperial Vault is surrounded by a round wall known as the Echo Wall. A mere whisper at any point close to it will send the sound traveling along the wall so that the echo can be heard clearly at the other end.
We will be transferred to our hotel, the 4 star Gonda Jian Hotel.
This Beijing hotel is located near Panjiayuan Antique Market. Positioned at 100 Pingleyuan, this attractive property offers easy access to various attractions that surrounds this beautiful city, thus making it an ideal destination for leisure travelers.

Friday May 27th (B,L,D)
Today, we will visit the famed Tiananmen Square, sight of the political uprising in 1989 where the Chinese people protesting for freedoms were massacred by the Chinese military.
This famous photo, taken on 5 June 1989 by photographer Jeff Widener, depicts a lone protester who tried to stop four advancing tanks until he was pulled into the crowd by several onlookers. When asked by Barbara Walters in a 1990 interview, Chinese leader Jiang Zemin said that he cannot confirm whether the man was arrested or not, but "the young man was never killed.
The events were a series of demonstrations led by students, intellectuals and labor activists in the People's Republic of China between April 15, 1989 and June 4, 1989. The demonstrations centered on Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
In Beijing, the resulting crackdown on the protestors by the PRC government left many civilians dead. The toll ranges from 200–300 (PRC government figures), to 2,000–3,000 (Chinese student associations and Chinese Red Cross
Today, a large statue in the square commemorates the tragic events of 1989 and the square is now a peaceful starting point for exploration of various museums and other tourist sites located on or adjacent to the square.
Next, we will visit the Forbidden City and Imperial Summer Palace. Lying at the center of Beijing, the Forbidden City, called Gu Gong, in Chinese, was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter high wall are 9,999 buildings. The wall has a gate on each side
It is the largest and best preserved Palace in the world – 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties resided and governed from here. It houses several important Halls (such as the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Heavenly Purity and the Hall of Earthly Tranquility). It houses more than one million pieces of cultural relics including the priceless furniture in the empresses’ state bedchambers.
The Summer Palace is home to the largest and best preserved imperial garden in China and one of the most famous classical gardens in the world.
Tonight we will enjoy a Beijing duck dinner feast.
Saturday May 28th (B,L,D)
Today features another highlight of our trip - a visit to the legendary Great Wall of China
The Great Wall is one of the existing mega structure and the world's longest man-made structure, stretching over 6,352 km (3,948 miles) from Shanhai Pass in the east to Lop Nur in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. "The long wall of 10,000 Li (里)¹") is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in China, built between 5th century BC and the 17th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire during the rule of successive dynasties
Overlooking the watchtowers on the peaks in the south and north, tourist can enjoy the wonderful scene where the wall wriggles along the mountain ridges. The Wall is about 24 feet high on average and its top is wide enough for 5 horses or 10 people to walk along abreast. The Wall is peppered with peepholes and openings for archers. The watchtowers were built at intervals of about 500 yards for accommodation, storing weapons and observing enemy movements. In 1987 the Badaling Section of the Great Wall was included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage sites
Photograph of the Great Wall in 1907
Not far from Badaling lies the Sacred Way of the Ming Tombs – lined with 12 stone, human figures and 24 stone animals this mystical road was once believed to lead to heaven. At the end of the path, visitors take turns rubbing a stone tortoise’s head and tail – for a long and wealthy life
Our visit to the Ming Tombs - the name given to the mausoleums of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) will conclude our day. The mausoleums have been perfectly preserved. Served by three stone doors, it is divided into three Halls consisting of five high palaces.
Our final visit today is the Bird’s Nest stadium, which in 2008 hosted the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Olympics.
Our final night is highlighted by another special Beijing performance and included dinner. (B,L,D)
Monday May 30th (Memorial Day) B,L,D
After checking out of our hotel, we will visit the Giant Pandas at Beijing Zoo.
No visit to Beijing would be complete without seeing the Giant Pandas – the famous mascot of China that feeds on bamboo and is of course the mascot of the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Outside the Xizhimen Gate, the Beijing Zoo is composed of various hills and halls that house elephants, pandas, hippos, antelope, giraffe, north-east China tigers and other rare animals.
We continue our day with a most unique Hutong tour by man-powered tricycle. Hutongs (also called Rickshaws) are a unique method of sightseeing, whereby tourists are taken on a three wheeled carriage that is pulled by a large, human powered tricycle through the narrow streets of ancient Chinese villages. Hutongs – ancient alleyways or lanes where the homes are arranged in quads around a central courtyard, were popular between the 13th and 18th century, when emperors designed the city so that hutong neighborhoods closest to the palace housed the aristocrats – with the common people pushed further out. Today, hutongs are home to everyday families and a hutong visit is an ideal way to learn about the daily life of ordinary Beijing citizens.
The tours are designed for the tourists to get a glimpse of life as the locals live it. Sometimes, hutong drivers make a special stop at the home of a local family, where the guests can meet the residents and briefly learn about their culture and customs, while being treated to hot tea.
Our final stop today is to the fashion market of Xiu Shui, followed by a ceremonial tea tasting, after which we will be transferred to the airport for our flight back to Los Angeles, arriving at 5:30pm the same day.
